Well... catalán is more or less easy to understand; but there are some words or phrases that are not equal to spanish... so sometimes it is complicated. I have family there and they have respect to people that do not know that co-official lenguage and speak spanish as well... people with brain at the end About the portuguese... it is similar to one of our co-official lenguages (gallego) so it is quite pretty easy to understand them. In the opposite side... it is hard for them to understand us LOL !!! Gallego (Galicia Region) it is pretty easy to learn and understand. Euskera (Euskadi Region - Vasque Country) it is impossible to understand... and hard to understand. Catalán (Cataluña Region) - is in the middle way between gallego and esukera; it is quite complicated. Awesome!!! Thank you for giving so much information. I always wanted to know this. I want to learn spanish after I finished this d**n english language exam. And if I learn well, I'll can understand a lot of the portugal!

Yes pzoltan!! Spanish is wuite hard to understand and to learn to foreing people I realized this when I had german lessons... German was f*cking hard to learn... I have a good english level and that made it ease because some words are really similar and so on... but it was hard to learn. Spanish is quite similar to German in the way of learning; it is really hard. You have to lear how to deal with verbs (like in the English lenguage... but harder); with the adjetives and so on... so pretty similar to German. I have many non spanish friends that are learning it and they all agree: "your lenguage is hell" LOL. Despite of my words, I encourage you to learn it. If you get it step by step you'll love it... and you'll be able to understand some Portuguese BTW, some of my friends says that it is easy understanding portuguese people... "It's like a spanish guy from Galicia drunken!!" LOL And they're not wrong at all !! I'm glad I could help you some... feel free to ask for more help

Oh yes I know it will be hard, because as you my grammar is very poor even in HUNGARIAN, haha! Seriously, I've never understand this grammar thing, but I'm really try to do it. If I would like to, I must learn the basics of the Hungarian grammar. ;D Belive me, I speak the world's most difficult language, maybe I can deal with spanish! Actually I really like it, I can understand a lot of things actually, because I see the common points in the indoeuropean languages. For me, that's why spanish is easy to understand. At least a lot of words from a massive text. Mika keep on saying that the Hungarian language is finno-ugoric but I really can't agree with him, no matter what he says. I hope I don't offend with him with this. Well, it would be nice to speak spanish! Next a slavic language would be awesome, the slovak language is really easy and has a lot of words from the Hungarian (and the Hungarian has some slavic orgin words too).

Wow man, that sounds cool. I hope you can deal with spanish soon!! I have no time right now to deal with another lenguage, but I'll do as soon as possible Few free time to spend on it I'll try to not lose my English and German level LOL (I had studied French for 2 years in High School... I f*ckin' hate that lenguage... aaaaaaargh). I learnt some Polish few years ago, I love how it sounds Hope can keep learning more in the future. Buena suerte aprendiendo el español amigo. ¡¡Lo conseguirás!! (Good luck learning spanish my friend. You'll make it !!) Something to start with

Wow I did not realize about it pzoltan!! For foreing people (outside of Spain) our lenguage is named "spanish", ok? For us is "Castellano" not Spanish (español); that is not correct to name it Spanish. I live in Castilla & León... one of our regions... as you can imagine, there is a relationship between "Castilla" and "Castellano" The lenguage that all the spanish people speak is suposed to have its origins in Castilla & León (If you want more info about this, please, feel free to ask... this is a non exhaustive explanation ) Hasta pronto (See you soon)

Want my opinion Mika? That guy is one of those poor "short-sight" people That way of thinking is the way of thinking of all those Catalonians that do not want to be citizens of Spain; you know, they reject any relationship with the rest and one way of it, is trying to convince the rest that their lenguage is from another country. It is said that Catalonian (co-official lenguage in Spain) is a kind of mixture of spanish and french... but no italian... anyway. It is like if say that Finish lenguage comes from the russian or german!! It makes no sense at all. I think you understand me... Except Euskera (another co-official lenguage here), both Catalonian and Galaican (Gallego) are a mixture of spanish and another lenguages. It is not demonstrated that Catalonian cames from italian... it makes no sense. It's crazy man!!

Well, he was a good guy and got really good with fellow Spanish girls and boys. I don't remember who it was from Spain here in this forum that said that it is true. I remember only two words from Catalan Bona nit...in Italian: buona notte. Ofcourse that is only a two word combination but I find Bona nit closer to buona notte than buenos noches. Then again I don't know anything about Spanish, Italian. But I know that these languages are based on Latin (protolanguage). Something like 400 B.C.

What do you mean? I do not want to say that that guy is a fool and so on. I just want to say that his way of thinking is the way of thinking of those bunck of retardeds that do not want to be spanish you know.
Can you imagine that in some schools and universities they teach only in catalonian? What the hell is that? I'm not citizen of Catalonia... what's the matter if I choose one of their universities to make a degree? Do I have to learn catalonian? If my sons attend to lessons in their schools; do they have to learn catalonian? F*ck, some politicians are worst than Stalin dude. It is a kind of fascism of a bunch of politicians...
Why a shop owner gets a fine (money imposition) if he has his products adverticed in spanish in his own shop? Or if his is shop logo is in spanish as well? That's the freedom they want? That's a complete tyranism of catalonian politicians... and the bunch of retarded people that follow them.

I've family there and I know what I'm talking about. Sad but true. That's a good example... but they have more common words with spanish than with another lenguage, so do not allow to be fooled by those one Mika. It's just my own opinion. They always try to convince using the words they need to get reason; with they have not, their co-official lenguage, is more similar to spanish than to another lenguage. Ask people from Valencia (One of our spanish regions). They can't stand with (put up with) those ones Valencia people knows that they have a non co-official lenguage that is really similar to spanish, not to catalonian or something else

^ ^ Oh, that I didn't know. Well, the exchange student spoke Spanish as far as I know. Maybe that kind of thing that Catalonia does has some kind of national feel or something like that in an exaggerated way. I do not know the history of Spain so well, but I am a little bit of astonished about the people stating that there is a Basque country there. Isn't that area also a part of Spain? Maybe in a same kind of way like Åland is part of Finland: they have their own autonomy.

Well... they are spanish both (Vasque Country and Catalonia). They are always f*cking with that stuff and so on. Spain is divided in 17 Regions and 2 cities with "autonomy". I mean, those 17 are part of Spain. No one has autonomy like your Aland has (maybe this is not a good example. you can compare us with the U.S.A.; similar 17 states, but with same laws for tons of subjets, same lenguage, same central goverment and so on.

What an interesting conversation about languages. It's more interesting than one should think, reading the title of this thread
