And I do wonder why HammrFall is big... i've often wondered the same thing. I do like their first three albums or so, but that's it.

I think the key to this topic is that it depends on what your definition of "big" is when it comes to a band. Is it selling tens of millions of albums and selling out arenas/stadiums as a headliner? That would be my definition, in which case I would say:
1. Accept 2. U.D.O. 3. Helloween during the 1980s 4. Gamma Ray 5. Mercyful Fate/King Diamond 6. Therion 7. Testament 8. Fates Warning (especially during the John Arch era) 9. Riot 10. Opeth

What I mean with big? I mean a band which can tour everywhere: South America, North America, Europe, Asia etc. In other words a band in Europe which can tour the states for example very year.
Blah, blah,,,for example to me Sabaton means a BIG band, just like Accept. I think there will not be such a success to many bands like it was in the 80's. I also think that if a band can sell million records, then it is a big one.

To me a band is big enough if the musicians can live by their music. For example Lechery is not big enough since the members have "normal" jobs as well. Otherwise they would die of hunger

Some of those under rated bands which I love listening from time to time at home 1. U.D.O. (my fave one and one of the most under rated ones in the heavy metal scene) 2. Scanner 3. Chroming Rose 4. A.S.A.P. 5. Psycho Motel 6. Symphony X 7. Nuclear Assault 8. Sodom 9. King Diamond 10. Primal Fear Well, I'd like to include more... but I can get depressed; too many cool bands that were "killed" before having some luck
