ok, so i've already posted about my new admiration for Sabaton on this tour. that band stole my heart that night, that's for sure!
BUT!
this thread is about the mighty Accept show that brought everything together that night.
it started by my son Delaney and i flying to san fransisco. we were met at the airport by my all time best friend on the planet, chuck. chuck is an out of control music lover and the most passionate person about life that you'll ever want to meet. chuck is like an animal in that he lives in the moment. every moment of every day. if there is a more sincere person anywhere, i'd like to meet him. anyway, we survive the drive to chucks house and get showered and changed for the show. we drive into the city to pick up one of chucks friends and former san fran DJ (he played a lot of my old bands (Heist) stuff on the radio and did several interviews with us to help our careers), Paul (last name withheld ) and survived the drive to a place nearby the hall called tommy's joint. we met fellow Accept fan jeff the chef there along with a few other Accept fans. after dinner and conversation we walked over to the hall for the show. i wanted to find frank right away so i brought everyone over to where the bus was parked and we just waited. sure enough frank came out and led us to the right line to wait for the doors to open.
we got our tickets and passes and proceeded to the meet and greet area where the guys were waiting at a table. peter personalized each of our show posters to us by name and the rest of the guys signed it. i'd brought my TT Quick - Metal Of Honor album cover for mark to sign. that was really cool. he pointed out that the drummer for TT Quick, Erik Ferro, is a true and real viking! is it just coincidence that mark knows all these great viking drummers?! so the rest of the guys signed the stuff, i asked herman about the new Victory album and he said it has been done for 3 years and he hasn't even heard it but just got the news that it's going to be released. that's cool. i'll be getting that asap too. by the way, in the conversations i had with each band member, they all know us forum members by name and country! i think that's amazing! we talked to Gaby for a little while too and had her sign my balls........ to the wall album cover! hahahaha been waiting all weekend to type that line out! hahahaha i told her she had to sign it since she'd written the lyrics, so she did. that's cool.
i walked over to the merch area to get the shirt for mika as well as one for me and one for delaney. i did this and still waiting while the poor guys were stuck signing all 19 of the things chuck had brought for them to sign! holy cow. i didn't think they would do it, but they did! some other guy had brought a white (Arbor?) flying V for them to sign. since it looked like just a cheap japanese brand guitar, i'll bet it shows up on ebay soon if it's not already there. so a few minutes later we all had our pics taken with the guys, that ruled. so we proceeded to the hall to wait for the show to begin. $6.50 for a small cup of beer?!?! probably 1/2 a can of beer in these small cups! what a rip off. $4.00 for a bottle of water. the hall was there to remove us from our cash, that's for sure!
sabaton played and of course they were really good. i was impressed by each member but the only thing that was driving me crazy was that when the drummer would bring the dynamics down and start playing 1/4 notes, he slowed the whole song down way too much and it lost all the momentum. other than that, it was wild to watch all the stuff he did on that little drum kit!
then Accept came on. they played the same setlist from the previous nights shows. the sound was incredible. frank had everything dialed in perfectly. they were all on top of their game. and the show just cemented what i've known for the past couple of months. i think there was one person, and one person only, who could pull off replacing a living legend and true vocal hero to many, and Mark is that guy. he ruled that stage. he commanded everyones attention while he was singing and left plenty of room for the band to breathe and stretch when he wasn't singing. he isn't "the new guy" in the band. he isn't just a band member, he's the leader of this band on stage! i've never been happier to see a guy succeed like mark has. he has taken Accept and made it his own.
Hermans solo's were few and far between but when he did play them, they were really cool and his style plays off of wolfs style very well. and of course, always that infectious smile! stefan was stefan. on top of every beat, every drum hit, every time. i love watching that dude play the drums! wolf and peter were of course perfection the whole night. i take that back, i did see wolf mess up a small section of, of all songs, BTTW. but that was minor. wolf and peters guitar battle was really fun to watch. i never realized it before, but peters ability on bass plus his stage presence really makes Accept what they are. i was so impressed with peter. and of course wolf, blah blah blah, best heavy metal guitarist on the planet, pure showman, blah blah blah, on and on! hahahaha the dude is amazing.
after about 2 hours i think, the show was over. we hung out and talked to frank some more while he was packing up. then we packed up and survived the drive home. delaney and i spent the rest of the week and weekend at chucks house. went sight seeing on saturday and got home late last night. a very good weekend but oh so tiring! i hated to leave, but it's good to be home!
