To add to all my other problems, this comp is taking a sh it. Perfect timing I guess. It started a couple weeks ago when I was having trouble at zone.com playing spades. That's my whole entire life down the drain right there. It'd be like someone taking cigarretes away from someone who smokes a carton a day. I went to imdb.com to watch a movie trailer last night... I had too many problems. Went to another site, had problems there too (watching in stream). I called my isp (I have high speed cable btw) and they couldn't detect anything wrong. I tried to clean up the comp. The "disk cleanup" doesn't even work... I open the program and it starts and then just freezes. I tried to remove some programs in my start.... it takes a year for add/remove programs to even open up on the screen.
It's the same thing over and over again... it gets tiresome. I buy a comp. It works problems free for 6 months... then this exact same crap goes wrong everytime. I know nothing at all so I can't fix it.... plus, I can't fix it even with someone trying to help. If I'm lucky I have a computer for 1 year maximum. Then I have to fork out $700+ for the next one..... it just gets so phucking old this crap.

Well, I always have the same problem too But I think it is because one download too much crap, and then when removing the crap some files are still left, and the system files are affected... Don't you have a rescue disc or something like that? In XP there's a function where you can set the computer back to an older date, I did that a couple of times with perfect result.

If it is what I suspect system restore won't take you far. Did you always use a firewall when you're online? Do you get pop ups? In most cases those symptons refer to a system infected with spy ware, mal ware etc. Go download the two free spyware removal progs (if you already didn't) Spybot and Adaware. They should take care most of the malicious software. Another thing that you can easily do to speed up your system is to get a Windows registry cleaning programm (e.g. Windows Registry Repair pro).

the only norton product that should ever touch your hard drive is antivirus. the rest of it just eats up resources and causes trouble. you have a cable modem so use a router as your hardware firewall. use spybot to get rid of spyware, and keep your xp up to date. you should have no trouble after that!
joe, if you want, i can do a remote assistance with you can get that thing close to what it was working at.

A lot of your post doesn't make sence to me. "router as a firewall" I don't know what that means. I don't know what a firewall is. I use "ad-aware" to get rid of spyware. I've never used Norton. It came on this comp and the trial ran out. Ive never used it on any comps.... maybe that's why I only have a comp for a year at a time. You bet it is. It is better to pay 20 bucks or so a year and have an antivirus like Norton running in your computer. You don't have to do anything, it works on its own. Besides, even a computer illiterate like me knows how to use Spybot. It is very easy and free!

What I was going to say have allready been said in the previous posts. But it doesn't make any bad to repeat it once again. Never connect a computer to the internet without decent firewall & antivirus!! Run spybot and ad-aware atleast once a month. If someone does think the yearly fee of NAV is to high, there are keygens.. ZoneAlarm is a ok personal-firewall for those who don't like norton. Do not install all kinds of crap aka games, searchbars and stuff offered to you on websites. Read carefully when you get an install this and that pop-up. In 99.9% you should ignore those offers and klick "no, I'm not interested in your f*****g spam!" / Chipwreck

I do not know practically anything but I am using Norton Antivirus and my firewall is Zone Alarm. Firewall for example asks you whether you want to go to some place on the net or not. I also have a pop up stopper. I don't know if it is much use, but at least you do not get annoying pop up windows to your screen. BTW, one good site is www.download.comAll in all here are better computer men than me. ;D
