Best 100 songs of 1989 on Youtube. Among the trash there still were many many good songs even in the last year of the beloved 80s.

Michael Jackson -- Beat It
It's an interesting tune to pick apart. For instance, just how were the bell tones made at the front? At first, it sounds like a guitar in octaves and a good deal of a rather specific reverb sound but there's obviously more to it than that. In the intro rhythm, there are some scratch notes at the front that you can easily overlook but you don't care because they're everything. Then there's knowing something about Quincy Jones (Jackson's producer and a quite successful artist in his own right.) When he wrote a song, he essentially gave you just chords and you had to figure out the reset. He expected his musicians to be musicians. Consider the performers on that tune. The cream of Rock & Roll who were just making music and never really wanted credit. That little riff at the end end of the intro is all Steve Lukather. Also, the tone on that first guitar note in the solo has always just seemed *ODD* to me but it strangely fits.
Here's an interesting video of Steve talking on the subject. (An excerpt from a larger interview.)
