INTERVIEW HELLFEST : U.D.O !!!
Udo Dirkschneider - 8 juin 2010
U.D.O's music goes straight to the point. And so does his leader, Udo Dirkshneider when he has to answer hellfest.fr's questions : Fast As A Shark !
The Dominator tour is now over (A few festival gigs are planned but nothing more). Looking back at it today: are you satisfied with the whole tour and how do you rate Dominator in comparison to the rest of the band’s discography?
We are very satisfied with the Domination Tour. It was the most successful tour for us so far.
What are the band’s future plans? When will you back to the studio?
Now, we have a lot of summer festivals and maybe some more shows in the fall. We are also working very slowly on our next album.
What keeps you going in the music business? I saw your Dominator Tour videos on your Internet blog: tour bus life, filming video reports in the snow, etc.: this is not the kind of life you expect from a 58 year old gentleman!
It’s easy to explain: I still have fun doing this.
Sebastian Bach (former Skid Row singer) once said that you had "the most metal name of all time". I still have no clue what he meant by that. Do you have any idea yourself?
Maybe he means that I’m the real metal voice!
Ronnie James Dio passed away on May 16, 2010. You wrote a statement about his death on your official website. Did you know him personally or you just wanted to pay homage to his talent?
This is very sad. I knew him personally and we had the same thinking about music!
You have been working with Stefan Kaufmann for years now. I guess that this professional collaboration goes over music as well. At this stage of your career, could you imagine writing music without him?
Yes, I can imagine writing songs without Stefan but only for other people, not for U.D.O. This work just with Stefan!
I read something rather peculiar about the way the band writes his songs (i.e. you and Stefan Kaufman): you write the lyrics and then the melody. Is there a logical explanation or it’s just the way that works the best for you?
It’s just the way it works the best for us!
Still about the lyrics: they have always been quite inspired by society. Is it a will? Or today’s life is what inspires you the most? Never been tempted to write about dragons, dungeons, magic, wizards, knights… like many metal bands do.
It is important for us to write lyrics about what’s going on in the world.
Is recording a concept album, developing a story track by track, is something that you could consider doing?
Maybe.
Accept is back with a new album and a couple of dates… without you. How do you feel about that? To many, Accept does not really have a reason to be without you. Nevertheless, will you check them out on stage or listen to their album when it’s out?
I will listen to the album when it comes out, of course! To see them live is very easy: YouTube!
Behind the musician is a man made of flesh and bones. Who is Udo Dirskschneider, the German citizen? Are you a strong reader? Do you have a passion for knitting or fishing?
Reading books and family.
What do you know about Hellfest? You probably know bands who played there in the past… What do people say about it in the music business?
I never heard anything about this festival in the past.
What do you think of this year’s line up? Are there bands you would like to watch while you’re there?
Kiss of course! And a lot of other bands. I hope I’ll have enough time though...
What can people expect from your set at Hellfest? You have a 40 min slot: deciding which songs you’ll play must be sort of a nightmare…
This is a nightmare. Let’s say a good mix of U.D.O and Accept classics.
To finish this off, do you have any message to forward to Hellfest festival-goers?
We’re looking forward to this festival. Let’s have fun!

Thanx to Andris:
Cult Metal veteran and one of the coolest guys around: Accept's ex-front man Udo Dirkschneider is a living legend. On the occasion of U.D.O.'s latest (and brilliant) release "Rev-raptor", we had a conversation with the man in the camouflage... suit, starting with the health of his guitarist, co-composer, producer, and fellow ex-Accept band member, Stefan Kaufmann.
EMP: Hi Udo - first things first: how's Stefan these days? UD: Oh, he's feeling a lot better now. He's still not running at 100%, but he'll get there soon, I think.
EMP: His back problems were the reason for the release delay of "Rev-raptor"… UD: Yeah, the CD was supposed to be on the market at the beginning of the year, but Stefan had enormous problems with one of his spinal discs again, making it impossible for him to work for several months. At first, they considered surgery, but then he found a doctor who treats the whole thing less invasive, yet even more effective. The only thing he'll have to curb in the future is his enthusiasm for intense head-banging, I guess...
EMP: That should be tough, considering some of your new tracks... They really kick ass - big time... UD: Well, that's his fault and he should blame nobody but himself, hehe...
EMP: Does a seasoned musician like you still feel a bit of pressure when it comes to delivering a new album - especially with your two last ones being your most successful ones for a long time so far? UD: No, fortunately, those times are long gone. Of course we want to be better, but we also want to develop, to deliver something new each time, and not being mere copycats of ourselves, or at least not too obvious ones. (grins) Not to copy ourselves - that is the only restriction rule we have. Apart from that, we finally have managed to say good-bye to this grinding schedule which wears out many bands. Today, we have a label and a management not harassing us with any kind of ultimatum.
EMP: So far, there have only been announced some U.D.O. festival dates in summer. Will there also be a big tour? UD: Oh, certainly. We have already planned a headliner trip through Europe for September and October.
EMP: Finally, I just have to ask you this: what do you think of "Blood of the nations", the comeback album of your former band Accept? UD: A good record. Appealing songs, great sound - I understand why people do like it.
EMP: But you didn't want to rejoin Accept? UD: Not at any cost. I was asked and I thought about it twice. But the others didn't want to agree to my conditions for a return - that's okay and fine with me. What really disappointed me, though, was Wolf Hoffmann's reaction and the lies he tells about me in interviews. I think, people of our age should be past that stage, shouldn't we?

ok, two things...
"that is the only restriction rule we have, not being mere copycats of ourselves" alright, i can understand that you don't want to use the same guitar riffs, but it's been the same drum sound and drum riffs since "No Limits". same drum patterns, tempo's, and lack of feeling. can we please change that soon?
"Wolf Hoffmann's reaction and the lies he tells about me in interviews. I think, people of our age should be past that stage, shouldn't we?" that is a great line to end the interview on!! classic. epic even!!

The last sentence is classic. Wolf should learn from Udo - who has always been a gentleman.
