Wow - this is really a surprising news... Puh...
At first: I wish Stefan all the best and a good health! Hopefully it is because of his back and not cause of something "more serious" (e.g. cancer) I think, that is the most important thing!!!
Then - my feelings are mmh. One the one side I always liked Stefan on stage...he was most of the time really cool.
On the other side there is (a little) hope, that U.D.O. will become better than the last years...better songs, better productions, better guitar-sound (studio AND live) and so on and so on... BUT: Stefan will be in the background...so I think, he will still write most of the songs...and of course he will produce the records (with all the things most of "us old fans" dislike). But we will see...
Overall, it`s sad! Stefan was never in the "first row" like e.g. Udo (or other singers) or bandleaders like De Majo (and we all know Stefan was - is - the band leader)...but he is a legend, too! His input and effort to the metal-scene over 30 years was/is HUGE!!!
So - get well soon, Stefan! (and leave your fingers from the U.D.O.-productions,*g*)

This is the same as I posted on the acceptboard. God I rarely have time for any of the boards these days...
I hope Stefan recovers. I wonder though if it's only the back that forces him to quit? Hope it's nothing else. No need speculating cause time will tell us. It says he will still be around the band so I guess he will still write songs and produce the band. The obvious choice for everyone is Mathias Dieth. But it seems he's to comfortable with his life now. Maybe the Wacken gig gave him another taste for this? If not, I think Uwe Lulis (ex. Grave Digger) would be a great a great choice. He's way too talented to play in small unknown bands. But I guess he is the type that wants to decide the path for the groups he plays in and that is maybe a problem. Superb guitarist however!

Bad news (in a way ) for a band which should release an album in maximum a year It is not clear if it will produce UDO on the future

When Stefan wasn't a member of the .B.A.N.D. he did a great job as producer on Faceless World and TimeBomb... OK it doesn't mean that he will make another TimeBomb now that he's not in the .B.A.N.D. anymore but still... Let's hope. That´s right my friend. The problem isn´t they can´t sound like those days.... the problem is they don´t want to sound like those albums! For the B.A.N.D. those albums are "the past" and now they want to sound "modern" and "future".... and for them, "modernity" is to sound like the "tor" albums, is "the XXI century sound"... that´s f*ckin sh*t!! If at least they decide to sound like "Holy" or "Thunderball", more classic Metal, way we would win a lot! The last 3 albums are a tribute to Rammstein sound

Absolutely true Samu. Those are my fears exactly. But... hope dies last (if it isn't dead yet).

I'm sorry for Stefan he is an iconic figure of this band. Unfortunately he still wants to continue produce the albums, this is something what I don't like as well.

John had said in UDO facebook: find Jörg Fischer. He is not my personal favourite, but he is better than Igor...or at least was. I don't know if he has played anymore, because of his laziness as a composer. But what about: Markus Becker, ex-Vanize? We all know his work with Bootlicker album. dude, that is brilliant!!!!!!! i would LOVE to see that! i wonder if that would spark Peter D. to get back into the game too. d**n i miss Vanize, especially after RAW. but i also agree with Uwe Lulis, that would be a great choice too. i would also agree with Mathias Deith as well, just for the song writing talent alone!! those are 3 great and well known choices Udo has there! i contacted my friend Tommy Gibbons to see if he was interested, but he has just joined another band and wouldn't want to leave the U.S., so i guess that is out. he would've made an excellent placement AND he's only 19 or 20 years old and full of energy. i also talked to the guy i'm working this side project with. he's my age and just light years beyond many guitarists out there. he might have interest. you guys will get to hear him soon with the stuff we are working on. he is also helping to push me to be a much better drummer right now. much needed!

same here. even though i'm not a fan of his productions, he is still a very cool guy and of course wouldn't like to see anything bad or serious come to him!!

Well, like Jerry, I am too busy right now to spend much time on any fan forums (I haven't been on the Accept forum since the U.S. tour dates were announced; didn't see any Accept onesie's in the photos of the merch booth so I need to jump on there and put in a request before 9/22).
I am in the middle of finalizing a grant application to the National Institute of Health to fund a research study to help prevent elderly folks with chronic health problems from being hospitalized when they don't have to be because their chronic conditions aren't being managed well by their primary care/family docs, etc., because hospitals can be bad places for the elderly if they don't absolutely have to be there (risk of bad infections, extra stress, etc.). This grant is due tomorrow.
However, I had to jump on here after I read the official press release from U.D.O. on my facebook homepage late last night.
I hope there's nothing serious health-wise with Stefan. By all accounts (other than Wolf's and Stefan S's perhaps), Stefan K seems like a good guy and has good interactions with fans. He is also clearly a very talented musician and a good song-writer and is forever an indelible part of the history and sound of Accept, and therefore of the history of heavy metal, the music and sound that we love above all else, whatever we may think of him as a producer for U.D.O. He is also obviously a close friend of Udo's and a close collaborator, and I hope like other folks that this isn't an indicator that we don't have long before Udo himself decides to hang it up. It seems not terribly likely since Stefan will continue to produce the band, but is nonetheless concerning. I still hold out the irrational hope that I'll get to see Udo perform live before he hangs it up, which will require me getting back to Europe sometime fairly soon.
As for a replacement guitarist, although I would love Matthias to come back in just as much as everyone, I'm pretty sure that he's been out of music as a guitarist professionally for a long time and is a successful lawyer (right?), and wouldn't be interested in coming back. Andy looked and sounded good at Wacken to me, so I wonder if he would be interested in coming back.
I'll put in a vote for John's buddy if he's willing/able to spend a lot of time recording and touring in Europe. There are a couple of guys around here playing in Priest/Maiden/Dio tribute bands who are pretty amazing, at least as technical guitarists, who I might forward this info to; don't know about their songwriting abilities.
For a laugh, what about a little someone named Ken K. Downing? He might have a little free-time these days between designing golf courses. His style would definitely fit, and he's a decent songwriter ; ) Like I said, a joke, but one can dream, right?

KK Downing would be cool in UDO. His stage presence matches Stefan's, and his solos full of floyd rose action are awsome!
